About

Hi, I'm Kylian Weijers, a director based in Amsterdam for documentaries, artist profiles and branded films. Strong at identifying and strengthening someone's voice, whether that's my protagonists, a brand, a campaign or a crew member, and creating moving cinematic pieces of work.

My aim is to make my audience more understanding, caring and empowered in the way they see themselves and the Other. I often work with people, agencies and cultural institutions who want to shift perspectives, focusing on amplifying their voices.

I approach film as a multisensory experience in which structure, layering, rhythm, visual language and soundscape work together to move people emotionally. I bring two sides to every project: the poetic, cinematic, kinetic side that combines joy and urgency, and the theoretical, research-driven side that likes to go deep. The two keep each other honest.

My focus on voice also shapes the way I approach branded work. I love discovering the core of a brand or campaign and connecting it to real people and real stories, translating that into branded documentaries that feel honest, human and cinematic.

In a previous life I worked as a producer for drama series and films. Don't get me wrong: I loved the set life, but every time I was doing script breakdowns or coordinating the development of new projects, I felt a growing itch to sink my teeth into the creative side.

Making documentaries for youth work on the side eventually pushed into the creative side: I quit my job, studied documentary research and development, and later landed a job at 100% as a documentary developer. It was, in many ways, a dream job. Yet a thirst persisted that I couldn't quite name. I realised my heart belonged out in the field, where I can shape reality up close and collaborate closely with the people who entrust us with their story and voice.

Today, I continue to develop myself as a director, constantly exploring new forms that serve the story. Since my path into filmmaking began by teaching myself every aspect of the process, I've grown into a self-taught Swiss-army knife and a strong one-person crew.

At the same time, I thrive in collaborations. I like to create a space for my protagonists and crew where they feel safe and empowered, in an atmosphere where the story can unfold with power and care. I also enjoy supporting other filmmakers in development and in the edit, as a developer, editor or sparring partner.

My long-term dream is to extend my practice into visual albums and video installations, and to push documentary into forms that resonate with a new generation. A generation that will inherit a world full of crises. A generation for whom documentary may not seem sexy now, but could find it one of their most powerful weapons.
